I det hundre og femtiførste året dro Demetrius, sønn av Seleukos, fra Roma og ankom med noen få menn til en kystby, hvor han tok over makten.

In the hundred and one and fiftieth year Demetrius the son of Seleucus departed from Rome, and came up with a few men unto a city of the sea coast, and reigned there.

Og da han gikk inn i sine forfedres palass, hadde hans styrker tatt Antiochus og Lysias for å bringe dem til ham.

And as he entered into the palace of his ancestors, so it was, that his forces had taken Antiochus and Lysias, to bring them unto him.

Da han fikk vite dette, sa han: «La meg ikke se deres ansikt.»

Wherefore, when he knew it, he said, Let me not see their faces.

Så hans hær drepte dem. Da Demetrius hadde tatt sin plass på kongens trone,

So his host slew them. Now when Demetrius was set upon the throne of his kingdom,

kom alle de onde og ugudelige menn av Israel til ham, med Alkimos, som ønsket å bli yppersteprest, som deres leder.

There came unto him all the wicked and ungodly men of Israel, having Alcimus, who was desirous to be high priest, for their captain:

Og de anklaget folket til kongen, og sa: «Judas og hans brødre har drept alle dine venner og drevet oss ut av vårt eget land.»

And they accused the people to the king, saying, Judas and his brethren have slain all thy friends, and driven us out of our own land.

Send nå noen du stoler på for å gå og se det kaos han har skapt blant oss og i kongens land, og la ham straffe dem med alle deres medhjelpere.

Now therefore send some man whom thou trustest, and let him go and see what havock he hath made among us, and in the king's land, and let him punish them with all them that aid them.

Kongen valgte da Bacchides, en venn av kongen, som styrte på den andre siden av elven, en stor mann i riket og trofast mot kongen.

Then the king chose Bacchides, a friend of the king, who ruled beyond the flood, and was a great man in the kingdom, and faithful to the king,

And him he sent with that wicked Alcimus, whom he made high priest, and commanded that he should take vengeance of the children of Israel.

Så dro de, og kom med en stor hærmakt til Judea, hvor de sendte budbringere til Judas og hans brødre med fredelige ord, men med ondskap i sinnet.

So they departed, and came with a great power into the land of Judea, where they sent messengers to Judas and his brethren with peaceable words deceitfully.

Men de lyttet ikke til deres ord; for de så at de hadde kommet med en stor hærmakt.

But they gave no heed to their words; for they saw that they were come with a great power.

Da samlet det seg en flokk av skriftlærde til Alcimus og Bacchides for å be om rettferdighet.

Then did there assemble unto Alcimus and Bacchides a company of scribes, to require justice.

Assidæerne var de første blant Israels barn som søkte fred med dem.

Now the Assideans were the first among the children of Israel that sought peace of them:

For de sa: «En prest av Arons slekt er kommet med denne hæren, og han vil ikke gjøre oss noe vondt.»

For said they, One that is a priest of the seed of Aaron is come with this army, and he will do us no wrong.

Så talte han fredelig til dem, og sverget: «Vi skal ikke skade dere eller deres venner.»

So he spake unto them, peaceably, and sware unto them, saying, we will procure the harm neither of you nor your friends.

Derfor trodde de ham; men han tok seksti av dem og drepte dem på én dag, i samsvar med ordene han hadde skrevet.

Whereupon they believed him: howbeit he took of them threescore men, and slew them in one day, according to the words which he wrote,

«Kjøttet av dine hellige har de kastet bort, og deres blod har de utøst rundt Jerusalem, og det var ingen til å begrave dem.»

The flesh of thy saints have they cast out, and their blood have they shed round about Jerusalem, and there was none to bury them.

Derfor falt frykt og redsel over hele folket, som sa: «Det er verken sannhet eller rettferdighet i dem; for de har brutt pakten og eden de avla.»

Wherefore the fear and dread of them fell upon all the people, who said, There is neither truth nor righteousness in them; for they have broken the covenant and oath that they made.

Etter dette flyttet Bacchides fra Jerusalem og slo leir i Bezeth, hvor han tok mange av dem som hadde forlatt ham, og visse av folket også, og da han hadde drept dem, kastet han dem i den store gropen.

After this, removed Bacchides from Jerusalem, and pitched his tents in Bezeth, where he sent and took many of the men that had forsaken him, and certain of the people also, and when he had slain them, he cast them into the great pit.

Deretter overlot han landet til Alcimus, og etterlot en styrke til å hjelpe ham: så dro Bacchides til kongen.

Then committed he the country to Alcimus, and left with him a power to aid him: so Bacchides went to the king.

Men Alcimus strevde etter yppersteprestkontoret.

But Alcimus contended for the high priesthood.

Og til ham strømmet alle de som forstyrret folket, som, etter at de hadde fått Judea under sin makt, gjorde stor skade i Israel.

And unto him resorted all such as troubled the people, who, after they had gotten the land of Juda into their power, did much hurt in Israel.

Da Judas så alt det onde Alcimus og hans følgesvenner hadde gjort blant israelittene, til og med mer enn hedningene,

Now when Judas saw all the mischief that Alcimus and his company had done among the Israelites, even above the heathen,

gikk han ut til alle områdene rundt i Judea og hevnet seg på dem som hadde vendt seg fra ham, så de ikke våget å dra ut på landet mer.

He went out into all the coasts of Judea round about, and took vengeance of them that had revolted from him, so that they durst no more go forth into the country.

På den andre siden, da Alcimus så at Judas og hans følge hadde fått overtaket, og visste at han ikke kunne stå imot deres styrke, dro han igjen til kongen, og sa alt ondt om dem han kunne.

On the other side, when Alcimus saw that Judas and his company had gotten the upper hand, and knew that he was not able to abide their force, he went again to the king, and said all the worst of them that he could.

Da sendte kongen Nicanor, en av sine ærede fyrster, en mann som bar dødelig hat til Israel, med befaling om å ødelegge folket.

Then the king sent Nicanor, one of his honourable princes, a man that bare deadly hate unto Israel, with commandment to destroy the people.

Så kom Nicanor til Jerusalem med en stor styrke; og han sendte bedragende vennlige ord til Judas og hans brødre, og sa:

So Nicanor came to Jerusalem with a great force; and sent unto Judas and his brethren deceitfully with friendly words, saying,

«La det ikke bli noen kamp mellom meg og dere; jeg kommer med noen få menn, for å møte dere i fred.»

Let there be no battle between me and you; I will come with a few men, that I may see you in peace.

Derfor kom han til Judas, og de hilste fredelig på hverandre. Men fiendene var forberedt på å ta Judas med makt.

He came therefore to Judas, and they saluted one another peaceably. Howbeit the enemies were prepared to take away Judas by violence.

Da Judas ble klar over at han kom med svik, ble han veldig redd for ham og ville ikke se ansiktet hans igjen.

Which thing after it was known to Judas, to wit, that he came unto him with deceit, he was sore afraid of him, and would see his face no more.

Nicanor også, da han så at hans planer var avslørt, gikk ut for å kjempe mot Judas ved siden av Kafarsalama.

Nicanor also, when he saw that his counsel was discovered, went out to fight against Judas beside Capharsalama:

Hvor omkring fem tusen av Nicanors menn ble drept, og resten flyktet til Davids by.

Where there were slain of Nicanor's side about five thousand men, and the rest fled into the city of David.

Etter dette gikk Nicanor opp til Sions berg, og der kom noen av prestene ut fra helligdommen, og noen av folkets eldste, for å hilse ham fredelig og vise ham brennofferet som ble ofret for kongen.

After this went Nicanor up to mount Sion, and there came out of the sanctuary certain of the priests and certain of the elders of the people, to salute him peaceably, and to shew him the burnt sacrifice that was offered for the king.

Men han spottet dem, lo av dem og misbrukte dem skammelig, og talte stolt.

But he mocked them, and laughed at them, and abused them shamefully, and spake proudly,

Og i sin vrede sverget han og sa: «Hvis ikke Judas og hans hær nå blir overgitt i mine hender, og hvis jeg noen gang kommer tilbake i sikkerhet, vil jeg brenne ned dette huset.» Og med det dro han bort i stor raseri.

And sware in his wrath, saying, Unless Judas and his host be now delivered into my hands, if ever I come again in safety, I will burn up this house: and with that he went out in a great rage.

Så gikk prestene inn og sto foran alteret og templet, gråtende og sa:

Then the priests entered in, and stood before the altar and the temple, weeping, and saying,

«Du, Herre, valgte dette huset for å kalle det med ditt navn, og for å være et hus for bønn og bønner for ditt folk:

Thou, O Lord, didst choose this house to be called by thy name, and to be a house of prayer and petition for thy people:

Ta hevn over denne mann og hans hær, og la dem falle for sverdet: husk deres blasfemier, og la dem ikke fortsette lenger.»

Be avenged of this man and his host, and let them fall by the sword: remember their blasphemies, and suffer them not to continue any longer.

Så dro Nicanor ut av Jerusalem og slo leir i Bet-Horon, hvor en hær fra Syria møtte ham.

So Nicanor went out of Jerusalem, and pitched his tents in Bethhoron, where an host out of Syria met him.

Men Judas slo leir i Adasa med tre tusen menn, og der ba han og sa:

But Judas pitched in Adasa with three thousand men, and there he prayed, saying,

«Herre, da de som ble sendt fra Assyriernes konge spottet, gikk din engel ut og slo hundre og femogåtti tusen av dem.

O Lord, when they that were sent from the king of the Assyrians blasphemed, thine angel went out, and smote an hundred fourscore and five thousand of them.

Ødelegg i dag denne hæren foran oss, slik at resten kan vite at han har talt blasfemisk mot din helligdom, og døm ham etter hans ondskap.»

Even so destroy thou this host before us this day, that the rest may know that he hath spoken blasphemously against thy sanctuary, and judge thou him according to his wickedness.

Så på den trettende dagen av Adar-måneden sluttet hærene seg til kamp: men Nicanors hær ble beseiret, og han selv ble først drept i kampene.

So the thirteenth day of the month Adar the hosts joined battle: but Nicanor's host was discomfited, and he himself was first slain in the battle.

Da Nicanors hær så at han var drept, kastet de fra seg våpnene sine og flyktet.

Now when Nicanor's host saw that he was slain, they cast away their weapons, and fled.

Så forfulgte de dem en dagsreise fra Adasa til Gatsara, mens de slo alarm mot dem med sine trompeter.

Then they pursued after them a day's journey, from Adasa unto Gazera, sounding an alarm after them with their trumpets.

Da kom de ut fra alle byene rundt Judea og stengte dem inne; slik at de, vendende tilbake på dem som jaget dem, alle ble drept med sverdet, og ikke en av dem ble levnet.

Whereupon they came forth out of all the towns of Judea round about, and closed them in; so that they, turning back upon them that pursued them, were all slain with the sword, and not one of them was left.

Etterpå tok de byttet og rovdyrene og slo av Nicanors hode og hans høyre hånd, som han strakte ut så stolt, og tok dem med seg og hengte dem opp mot Jerusalem.

Afterwards they took the spoils, and the prey, and smote off Nicanors head, and his right hand, which he stretched out so proudly, and brought them away, and hanged them up toward Jerusalem.

For denne årsak gleder folket seg stort og de holdt denne dagen som en dag med stor glede.

For this cause the people rejoiced greatly, and they kept that day a day of great gladness.

Videre bestemte de seg for å feire denne dagen hvert år, den trettende i Adar.

Moreover they ordained to keep yearly this day, being the thirteenth of Adar.

Slik fikk Juda-landet ro en liten stund.

Thus the land of Juda was in rest a little while.
